Ugly Mirror

I've got a beautiful antique dresser my grandmother handed down to me. Only problem is the attached mirror: it's got gray streaks and dark spots. Should I be looking to replace the whole mirror and frame? Can I take the mirror apart form the frame and replace it? Where do I find replacement mirrors?

Replacing your mirrors should be pretty easy. With a little luck and patience, you might even find an antique one that would match the style. A couple questions: Is it round, oval or square? What size?

The streaking and spots are common problems with antique mirrors, it is from the method that used to be used when creating mirrors. Before rushing into replacing the mirror, get an estimate on the value. Will it be devalued because it will no longer be original (this may change your mind on updating the mirror), or will the value increase from the renovation. If you want to keep the antique quality of the dresser, your best bet would be to talk with an antique refinishing company or dealer. They could give you some good direction on where to find cuts of glass that will match. You can also try a glass cutting company, as they can cut to size and dimension.

Resilver Mirror

Look in the phone book for glass and mirror shops and call them to find out if they offer a resilvering service. If you can separate the mirror from the frame, take it in to be resilvered, and you will get it back free of all the gray streaks and dark spots. It may be cheaper than buying a new mirror depending on the style of mirror.
