Wrapping Wires

When you've got a wire that needs to be attached to a contact and secured with a screw, form the end of the wire into a sort of "C" shape and wrap it clockwise around the screw post. That way, when you tighten the screw, the wire isbeing wrapped tighter too.

When replacing outlets take the time to wrap a few wraps of electrical tape around the sides of the outlet or switch. This will keep it from grounding out to the box or other wires.

to form the "J" bend

many wire strippers will have a hole in the side of the cutter, designed for just this purpose. Insert the wire so it just protudes thru the other side. Twist the cutters a half turn and you'll find that it makes a "J" bend in the wire just the right size to fit the screw terminal on a wall switch or receptacle. Adjusting how far you insert the wire thru the stripper will make a longer or shorter "tail" on the "J" - too long and it's difficult to get the wire around the terminal screw - too short and you don't get a good wrap.
