When you're connecting or disconnecting chromed plumbing fixtures (showheads, e.g.), wrap a thin piece of cloth around the piece you're trying to remove or connect. Put your wrench or pliers over the cloth (you'll need to open them just a little bit more) and turn as you normally would. You'll keep from putting scratch marks on the soft, shiny metal.
