My husband and I moved into an older house in September and I've been repairing things here and there but what's bothered me the most is the carpet on the bottom floor. We can't afford to replace it all because the space is so huge, so I thought I'd take out sections at a time. Underneath the carpet is tile, which I like and want to keep. I tore out the carpet from our door entry way leading up to the stairs but the problem now is that the carpet surrounding it is sticking up and looks terrible. I tried using a staple gun to get it to stay down, but the staples barely went through the carpet!

My first question is, how do I get it to stick back down? Next, in our dining room is somewhat the same situation. I haven't removed the carpet but pulled it back enough to see that there is tile underneath it as well but a layer of some kind of black stuff is stuck all over the tile, is there a way to remove it and is it harmful? Any and all help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as my husband hasn't come home from work yet to see the disaster I have created!

Thanks!, Kelly
