Compressor and nail gun

I am currently thinking about purchasing a pneumatic compressor that I could use for a variety of jobs in the future but am not at all familiar with what to look for. Some of the portable models on the market don't seem as though they would be enough for larger projects.....At some point I would use it for more than a finish nailer. While portability is definately a plus I'd like to be able to use a good framing or roofing gun at some point and am looking for a small "all-purpose model" Could someone update my lexicon of tool terms so that I might be a more informed consumer? What should I be looking for? Thanks!

One size doesn't fit all

Don't expect one gun to handle all of your needs. The larger the nail, the larger the gun. Hauling around a heavy gun for finish nailing is overkill.

The same holds true for compressors, unless you don't expect it to be portable. Ask yourself what you want to carry around.

I definetley realize I'll be looking at a variety of tools in the future but I'm not even sure where to start. What types of compressors(i.e. PSI and scfm) would be appropriate for finishing and what would be appropriate for framing etc.? Could you make any recomendations?

Sorry for the delay in responding, but this site never notifies me that someone has responded after I post, even though I've clicked autosubscribe. The main concerns with tools are safety and how they feel in your hand. A great tool for a large man may overwhelm you. You need to go to a store that sells these products and see how they feel to you. Here are a couple of online review sites, but you still need to feel the tool and use it before buying. Realize that what feels fine for a few moments may be more than you can handle if you are working all day. http://www.newwoodworker.com/reviews/index.html#airtools http://www.onlinetoolreviews.com/toolreviewindex.htm Brad nailers are usually less expensive than finish nailers. Pick your tools first, and then match your compressor to the needs of your tools.
