Painting my Entertainment Center

I need help re-painting my entertainment center that I believe is real wood (it is heavy, large & would be expensive to replace). The problem is that it has a slighly shiney, outer layer and paint iwll just come right off it if I paint over it. In addition, I would like to possible go with a black rustic look. Should I sand the entire thing, will that do anything? Is there something I can apply before I paint? Please help me...once upon a time a big oak entertainment looked good now it's a huge eye sore....thank you.

It was so funny to read your topic ~ as I had just done the same thing to an oak, large, heavy entertainment center. I did sand the entire unit (with a palm sander) then primed and painted. I was going for the cream color effect w/ areas sanded to give that "worn" look as well. It came out great. Coming from the same perspective of what once was large and oak looked great ~ then got really tired of that look! Good luck with the project ~ time consuming but much cheaper than replacing!

Thank you for the response, I feel that I can proceed with confidence....it may take time but hopefully the end result will be worth it.
