Kitchen Cupboards Need a New Paint Job

I've decided to paint my kitchen cupboards once the weather becomes warmer and I can paint on my balcony. It was 2001 that I painted the cupboards with Melamine paint in a dark ivory colour. Previously the cupboards were a faux brown wood colour. Not real wood. My condo is 33 years old and the wood-coloured cupboards are the originals that came with the condo. The paint that I used seven years ago is beginning to chip on the edges and corners of the cupboard doors. What I would like to know is this: Is Melamine the best paint to use for painting kitchen cupboards? Or, is there a better paint available on the market now? Also I plan to change the colour of the cupboards. My kitchen back splash and one wall are ceramic tiles with splashes of red tiles throughout the kitchen. The other walls are pale yellow. I cannot afford to make other changes in my kitchen. I will be happy to have newly painted cupboards, outside & inside. Would like to paint the inside a different colour. I'm wondering if a true red, similar to my red tiles, would be a nice bright colour for my cupboard doors. I LOVE red! Any suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated. I shall attempt to include a pic of my kitchen cupboards with my message. Thanks........really appreciate your help.
