Laying a brick patio, over sand.....need advice

I have a patio area in which the old bricks had settled so that drainage was toward the house instead of away. Also they were a bit uneven. I've removed them; filled in low areas with clay, and am ready to put new sand in, and re-lay the bricks. But I need advice on how to make sure that they lay slightly sloping away from the house, and lay evenly. Also, about making the sand even. Thanks for any direction. sue
