Need to spruce up a wood-paneled (yes, wood-paneled) room with hardwood floors

Hi - I need a quick and easy 'makeover' suggestion for my husband's horrific wood-paneled office that I can complete during the holiday weekend while he's away. Nothing major - no painting, no sanding, no sheetrock - just something to spruce it up... What would you suggest for a "room of wood"? There are 3 windows, so I can always play with window treatments... but is there anything else I can do?? I loathe the room as it currently is, and he hates it as well... So I just want to liven it up a bit... Any quick suggestions? I know it sounds just too easy, but I swear everything I put in there gets drowned out by all the doggone WOOD!!! Are there any colors or materials in particular that might help tone it down?

Ellen, I completely understand how you feel. So often we hear from women with the exact same problem. We even had a Jane of the month who fixed an entry way that was all wood paneling. Her name was Toni Laird (go here to go to her page and see how it came out http://www.bejane.com/node/1537 ). Here's what she did:

In the first house we had a very dark paneled entryway so we also put up heavy textured wall paper (also known as sizing) to cover the top half of the paneling in the entry way (it was dark wood and really outdated) and then we painted the paper one color, painted the exposed paneling below (which now looks like wainscoting) and added a chair rail. It brightened it up so much!

This may seem like a lot of work but it's something you could definitely do in the course of a weekend (trust me I've spent many weekends covered in paint and it was always worth it!).

Good luck and make sure you take before and after pictures to show off to the entire Be Jane community when you are finished!

Hugs 'n hammers,

Heidi
