Hi, I'm about 6 months pregnant. Is it safe for me to stain and urathane my pine floors?

My husband and I are in the midst of a huge reno. project on the house that we are currently living in. We started out with gutting the place and we're now at the point of staining our trim and all our floors. Is it safe for me to stain and use urathanes while I'm pregnant? Thanks for the feedback, Ana

Ana,

I am actually 36 weeks myself and completely understand tha tyou want to help out on this but honestly it's not a good idea for you to do so. And to add insult to injury, you really need to make sure that if your husband still is going to still go through with this that he finds water based stain and urethanes to use. The reason for this is the fact that many stains, urethanes and paints continue to give off noxious chemicals for months after they are applied. (I'd also recommend not being around during any sanding that still needs to take place and not coming back home for at least 48 hours after the floors are done.)

My reccomendation for you is to go online and research what's out there for the "green" market and I'm sure you'll be able to find something that won't be that harmful for you or the baby.

I can totally relate to your wanting to be a part of this, I know how I felt when my husband decided to paint the room one day when I was out of the house. Though I have to tell you that when I came home, regardless of the fact that he had gotten a non-VOC (volitile Organic Compound) paint, when I walked into the room it felt like I was inhaling vic's vapor rub and I couldn't stay in there. Though the odor did go down considerably within 24 hours and within 48 you could almost not smell the paint at all. Typically I can smell it for at least a week. Regardless of what I can smell, I know that regular paint continues to give off VOC's for up to 6 months after it's application.

I know this probably wasn't what you wanted to hear but it's probably the best thing to do. We actually have an article on the site about all of the things not to do when you are pregnant (top of the list is electrical!) should you have any other questions

I hope you are still feeling great and enjoying your pregnancy. Now is the easiest time. For me it started to change around 32 weeks. So have fun while you can. Right now all I want to do is find a comfortable position and stay in it! ;)

Hug 'n hammers,

Heidi

Thanks Heidi. I just noticed I said 6 "months" and I was actually 6 weeks when I posted my question. I have convinced my husband to do the staining by himself or have delegated it to other family members. I still have to live in the house and unfortunatly all the supplies were bought before I found out that I was pregnant so they are not waterbased. Therefore we have had the windows open consistantly...a little cold here in Ontario, Canada but better than smelling the fumes. Ana
