Painting Cabinets with Oil-based Paint?

My hubby and I are preparing to paint our new (yet still horribly ugly) cabinets in our kitchen. We've removed the doors and hardware, sanded off the old finish, and taped off the surrounding areas. We are now ready to prime, but are hesitant to "pull the trigger" b/c we are afraid of getting fumed out of our house! If we hang plastic sheeting to separate the rest of the house and ventilate well, will the smell REALLY be that bad? Or, should we play it safe and wait until we have a back up location to spend the night? Thanks, Elizabeth

Kiltz primer doesn't have a strong odor. I just painted my kitchen cabinets and was not bothered by the odor at all. I did use a waterbased paint after the oil based primer. Oil based products are so messy. I hope that you have a lot of mineral spirits for clean up!

I used Behr semi-gloss latex paint. First I cleaned them thouroghly and primed them. But the Behr latex paint worked great and there was no odor. I love my cabinets now!
