Veneer ? cracked & peeling on exterior front door

Can someone tell me how to fix cracked and peeling/splintered veneer on an exterior front door? The door is so old, they don't even make that size door anymore....it is a size 28 instead of the standard 34 -36" width. Replacing the door and installing it would cost us roughly $1700 because we would have to special order it. Can anyone tell me if I can just spackle and sand it, prime it and then paint it? We really don't want to spend the money on a new door, and we are thinking of moving soon, so we need to do it soon. Thanks!

You may be able to relaminate it. Try using titebond 3. First clean the area then liberally apply the glue. Now you'll need to flaten it out with some heavy weights. After the glue dries use some wood filler on the areas that are still low. After it dries sand it off smooth and refinish. It should last for a few years. Luck, Gerald
