Hardwood Floors under Carpet

I have just purchased a home that has beautiful hardwood floors under the carpeting. I have removed the carpeting and started on the tedious task of removing the tacking that has been nailed into the wood floors. The floors surprisingly don't need to be refinished, but I am concerned about the holes in the wood that were created by the nails/staples that held the carpet down. Can anyone tell me if I need to use wood filler or could I just put a poly urethane to seal these holes? Thanks

Just to find hardwood floors under carpeting is a bonus but floors that don't need sanding, that is like hitting the jackpot! having renovated many floors, i would highly recommend that you fill in the holes with wood filler and then varnish over them. it is more work but i think the holes will show if you just poly over them.
