Leveling a floor--any advice?

Hey Janes-- I want to put a hardwood floor in the bedroom (and recently scored a whole bunch of vintage oak top-nail flooring at a great price!) Thing is that our house, like many older houses, slopes. The outer wall edge of the bedroom is noticably lower than the inner wall. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with/advice on leveling a floor before installing hardwood. I'm thinking I could take it down to the subfloor and install a series of shims and then fill between the shims with floor-leveling compound? Then install a thin layer of plywood or masonite and lay the wood strips over that? (But I have no idea if this corresponds to reality or not--the projects I complete in my head are always so simple and always go so well!) So I would love to hear from any gals who have done a project like this. Your thoughts, please. Thanks! --Suzanne

We had a similar issue in another house we remodeled about four years ago and tried the exact technique that you mentioned above. But, what ended up happening was that the floor boards started to crack for some reason. So, this past year in an old condo my husband and I renovated, we leveled out the floor by laying another thin layer of concrete right onto the subfloor to level things out. It was a lot more work, but ultimately, we got the result we were hoping for. Good luck! :)
