How to paint over Molly's

How do you paint over the metal molly screw holders? Do you cut them out and then patch holes or do you try to pound them in further and spackel over top?

It's like opening a wine bottle, you can remove the cork or shove it in but removing it is best, especially if you don't like sipping pieces of cork! seriously, though, it is always best to remove old hardware and then patch over the hole. pounding the piece into the wall can create other problems. cheers!
