MAKING YOUR HOME YOURS
When I bought my first place just over 7 years ago, I didn't understand the concept of my home being a reflection of me. I knew I would add some paint to the walls, new carpets and change out a few lights and I figured I'd be done. I don't think I've ever been so wrong in my life. It didn't take long to see that these small changes weren't near enough to make my house feel like my home.
I started on projects that made changes not only in how my house looked but that also changed how I felt and lived in it. (This was totally not something I'd ever expected to come out of doing home improvement.) Some were simple like adding a dimmer switch for ambiance, and others were more complex like creating my own personal spa in my masterbath.
It became obvious to me that moving walls wasn't a prerequisite to making my home into my dream home. The original dark kitchen that came with the house went from feeling clausterphobic to a welcoming space that beckoned me to cook! (It was a good thing, too, because I couldn't afford to eat out and pay the mortgage.)
As I changed each room it became bluntly obvious that, while I thought that I had been living in my home, I had actually only been existing in it.
I was amazed to learn this about myself. Then I started looking around at my friends houses and found the same thing in their homes and realized how much of an epidemic this is. So my question to you is: are you truly living in your home or are you just existing in it? It may take a bit to truly wrap your brain around this concept until you've actually changed a room in your home, but then it will be completely obvious! So think about it—and for renters out there, the fear of losing a security deposit is not a good excuse!
