Jeffe- Thanks for your help. I liked your idea about the t.v. cabinet & will do just that- thin blocks to hold up shelf without nails, etc.
I was afraid I'd have to call an electrician, as you said. I DO have a back up UPS for my computer, but I still think the darn puter needs its own line. Like my mom said, "it isn't the initial cost- its the upkeep"- on most big ticket items (cars, houses, computers, horses, yadda, yadda).
Thanks, again, for all your good suggestions & advice.
I love this site!

For the computer, I'd suggest getting a UPS (uninterruptable power supply). A UPS is basically a battery with some eletronics that monitor the line voltage. If the voltage dips (like when a large appliance kicks on), the battery makes up the difference and continues to provide a full 120v to your computer. In case of a power outage, a UPS will power your computer anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the UPS. This allows you enough power to safely shut down your computer, at the least, or even to continue working till the power comes back on, with the larger UPS's.
