Occupation: Mother, Grandmother, Wife and Secretary!

Favorite Tool:

Project: Upstairs Bathroom (previously known as the "cat's" bathroom)

Jane: What was the first project you ever took on in your home?
Judy:
"I work for an electric supply company, and after asking the guys to come in and hang fans in my house I finally got fed up so 9 months later I hung up 4 ceiling fans and I didn't burn down the house that week-end! I have since put in 3 more. I live in Texas and you need one in every room!"
Jane: What did you do to your home?
Judy:
"I had let my daughter paint her bathroom turquoise and sky blue, and the colors clashed - bad! I had not realized painting directly on exposed wallboard would cause so many problems. The tub used to be free standing so I wanted it to look like it was built in, so I made a box to cover the exposed plumbing and tiled over the box all the way around the tub to the floor. I also had an ugly, gold, speckled Formica counter which I couldn't sand so I sanded and tiled it. Then I put up bead board all the way around the room, stained and sealed it.
I also repainted all of the cabinets in there even the medicine cabinet! I sanded it down, getting off the rust and then I sprayed it with silver paint. I thought you'd be able to tell it was painted, but you'd never know the difference!"
Jane note: Our favorite part was when she got finished she noticed that her wood toilet seat didn't match the stain she had used on the bead board around the room, so she it sanded down and re-stained it! Now that's a Jane!
Jane: What is one basic principle that you use when doing home improvement around your house?
Judy:
"Anytime I do a home improvement project I have to buy my own tools. I have my own tools and my husband has his. I like to keep mine clean, in working order and easy to find. He doesn't!"
Jane: How does your family help with your projects?
Judy:
"My husband would come in and I would have to kick him out. He'd give me advice that I didn't like so I'd till him to get out. When I'm doing a project don't get under my feet and don't tell me I can't, because I will show you I can. Now my youngest, Haley, is doing the same thing. She takes on things because she's seen me ask questions and then do everything from drive a tractor to build a barn for our horses!"
Jane: What was the most amazing thing you got out of this project?
Judy:
"I learned that I can lay tile and do trim work. Now all I want to do is lay tile every where! I love the fact that whenever I go into this bathroom it just brings the biggest smile across my face."
Jane: What one piece of advice do you have to offer other aspiring Janes out there?
Judy:
"I may be a secretary to earn my living but that's not who I am. Just because the world sees you as someone it doesn't mean that's who you are. And as a woman, you might not have the brawn, but don't worry - you've got the brain and that's all you need!"
Jane: Amazing work Judy! We're proud to have you as a Jane!
