We helped our most recent Jane In Training Brely turn her bedroom from barren to beautiful with a few simple projects, but it was the details that really tied the entire room together. Brely's desire was to create an exotic room with a rich Moroccan feel to it to her feel as though she were on a permanent vacation.

We chose to "go big" on the décor of this room because it was serving as her own personal sanctuary and sometimes the larger the décor pieces you add, the cozier a room can feel. Tiny pieces and frilly fittings can make you feel dainty, but Brely expressed to us that she wanted to feel safe and comfortable -- as though her room was enveloping her. Big and heavy furniture tends to achieve this, and Brely's room was spacious enough to handle it without being overbearing.

Because the focal point of any bedroom is the bed, we felt this was the best place to express the exoticness of the theme. Burnt orange and copper are among Brely's favorite colors -- and incidentally complement her vibrant personality -- so, we chose warm hues for the upholstered portion of her headboard. To make the "frame" of her headboard, we disassembled a four-pane hand carved room divider and used three of the panels to surround the fabric covered interior. The remaining pane we mounted on the wall to carry the theme throughout the room.

We outfitted the bed in the softest of textiles to make Brely feel like a queen. Velvety duvets and shams were topped off with a plush faux fur throw. Combining the different textiles heightens the senses-something we definitely wanted when romance is the goal!

One aspect of Brely's room that took away from the aura of romance was her plasma screen television that rested on a small table. To resolve this, we moved the set onto a new, large dresser and surrounded it with plants for camouflage. To complement the dresser, we placed identical nightstands on either side of Brely's bed. (No bedroom that is ready for romance should have one night stand-it sends a "one night stand" message!). To add to the bedside lighting, we decorated the new furniture with ceramic lamps with wide bases.

Finally, Brely had a beautiful mirror that was lost in her original room. But as part of the final décor in her new bedroom, it helped to give the room depth and a sense of glamour. We placed soft, shag rugs on the carpet, for some added luxury. Hey, every girl can do with a little more luxury in her life, right?

While the home improvement projects we did gave Brely the romantic room she longed for, the décor added the personality. Like Brely, the room is bright, vibrant and ready for love.
