Installing shelves under staircase

My mom put shelves underneath the basement/cellar stairs. Underneath each stair was a shelf for storing canned goods, etc. I wished I had paid more attention and asked her how she did it. She's now deceased and no longer here for me to ask. For the life of me I can't remember how they were done. I do remember though that she did not use shelf brackets to hold the shelfs in place. I would like to do the same. Can anyone help? PS My mom was a "Be Jane" long before many women even thought of it. When I was a teen (in the early 60s), she removed all the lathe and plaster walls in my bedroom and replaced them with sheetrock, then wallpapered the walls in my choice of paper. I could go on and on about all the "man" projects she did around the house, but that would bore you all.

Shelves under stairs

Well, the simplest way is to simply install cleats. These are boards that are attached to the wall that will hold your shelves. So if I'm understanding correctly, as you walk down the stairs to the basement, the ceiling above you is the bottom of the stairs from the first floor to the second floor and has walls on each side. If this is the case, take 1x3 Pine or something similar and cut to length to make your cleats (supports for each end of the shelf). Attach them to the wall with screws (prefereably to a stud) and then cut your shelf to length to set on top of the two cleats. Screw for stability. You'll likely want your shelve to be at least 8-10" deep. That's it, hope this helps.
