Resurfacing Fireplace

Our home is about 30 years old and we have 2 charcoal grey brick fireplaces. I heard you can update your fireplace with masonry laminate (I'm not sure that's what it's called). Is that way over my head or can I do it myself?

I am a masonry contractor, I do this all the time with people who dont like the brickon their fireplace, one would be to paint it, I would not use a laminate on a fireplace face, the most common thing I do to them is update them with a rock veener of their choice, if your up to it the internet has site about installing or the side of the box also tell how to install, the only draw back is expertise, I have been doing it for 18yrs so it comes easy for me to put rocks over a brick veener and make it look beautiful..hope this helps, Joe

for your reply about how I can modernize my existing fireplaces. Sounds like this is a job for a masonry contractor if I can afford one. I am way too much of a novice to attempt brick veneer and unfortunately, I don't like the look of painted brick. Hopefully, this is not too expensive. Thanks again.

You can also resurface with ceramic tile or dressed stone - marble, granite, travertine, etc. tiles. There is a certain ammount of prep involved, and with natural stone there may be some fabrication that will need to be done. But if you're used to doing some light construction and take care with your layout, it's deffinately a project that a home owner could tackle.

My mother-in-law had this horrible brick fireplace (was actually the brick veneer) and it looked like something from outta 1960. So we used a wonderbar and popped all the fake bricks off and then used thinset and a tile cutter to install these 12" tiles. It turned out great. We then made the fireplace wall an accent wall and used a deep blue Venetian Plaster to give it texture. She purchased an inexpensive new mantle and I helped her install it by putting a cleat on the wall screwed into the studs. The mirror over the fireplace is one of my original designs that I had in my house for a while but gave to her.

It's much improved from what it was and definately is more modern. You might want to try something like this - just have fun with it! You can do it - rent the tools from your home improvement center - you don't have to buy them. And come online here for help and support. Good luck!

Tiling over the old brick hearth (I think that's what the bottom part is called?)

After a full day's work - the fireplace tile and mantle are done!

Oops, this is a little out of order. But I started off with cement backer board on the vertical parts to be sure the tile adhered correctly.

And here it is completed. Now if she would just get rid of that horrible purple carpet!
