Help please

I have "inherited" an old wardrobe and I would like to convert it into storage space for my sewing room. One side has pull-out drawers, the other has a pole to hang clothes on. I would like to install shelves into this half to stack fabric and books on. What would be the best way to go about this?

Try using cleats

What you can do is put something called cleats (small pieces of wood that you screw into the sides of the wardrobe (from the inside) to create a structure for the shelves to sit on. Then drill the shelves on to that. You will probably want to use a paint grade plywood for the shelves.

If you don't want to damage the original piece

If the construction of the wardrobe doesn't provide a good place to mount cleats, or if you just want to avoid damaging the original piece, make freestanding shelves that sit inside the wardrobe. You can do something as easy as the snap-together wire storage cubes, or build wood shelves to fit. To make wood shelves, you'd essentially build a book case dimensioned to fit in the wardrobe.
