Removing pet odors from flooring...

Dear Jane,

Just pulled up the old pet stained carpet. Was planning to paint with Kilz paint to get rid of the pet odor. Found vinyl flooring under the carpet intact. How would you suggest preparing the floor before my new carpet is installed? I don't want to smell the doggy urine anymore!

Dear Janet P.,

Sounds like you have a stinky situation on your hands! Well the first good news is that you are removing the carpet and hopefully the padding as well. If you are, this should decrease the smell substantially. If you're not, then we can't suggest it strongly enough!

Now that the carpet is up, we recommend that you:

  1. Clean the floors very well and with a pet deodorizer.
  2. You may even want to pull up the old tack strips as they may have been urine soaked over the years.
  3. Then we still suggest that you apply at least one coat of the Kilz primer. We find that the alcohol based tends to be the best working of all of them. Just check at your local store to make sure that the linoleum won't react with it.
NOTE: Only follow this step if you don't ever plan on using the linoleum floor again!

That should take care of it. Let us know how it works out!

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us at any time. We're here for you!

We hope this helps!

Hugs 'n hammers,

Jane
