doorknobs

My house is a montgomery ward kit house from the late 1800's, ( no im not kidding, right out of the catalog)and needs tons of work. So I have decided to redue all the interior molding and finish work. I have decided to start with our interior bedroom doors. They are at least 30 yrs old. bedroom door has the old glass turn knob (one missing with round setting, the other door is slightly newer,,,20yrs,,.I have no idea who made them so finding the same company is out of the question, hubby is not a carpenter (neither am I ) so getting fancy with recutting holes is not something I am looking forward to and plus he isnt thrilled with the whole interior rebuild idea, so I have decided to take on the challenge of refinishing and finishing everything myself. Starting with interior doors. He's convinced we cannot replace the doorknobs at all because of thier age, and doesnt even want to take them off. I however am determined to do this but I also dont want to hear " I told you so!" Help!

Hmm, interesting...... I'd take a couple detailed pictures of the knobs and head down to your hardware store to see if they can perhaps do a special order for you. I'd look at many different places, including the INternet. ----THere are TONS of people who are in similar positions, and where there's a need, there's GOT to be a market to help people like you out. Hate to say it, but your number one tool is going to be research, research, and more research. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- And don't be scared to have to outfit the doors to fit modern knobs. They are now all convieniently sized/fitted and you can either buy or rent a specific drill bit that will make the hole size you need very easily....Go tell your hardware store what you need, and they should gladly be able to help you out, if not them, then another should.

Mortised lockset?

Depending on how old you doors are, they may be a rail/stile construction with a mortised lock set. Looking at the edge of the door, instead of the usual bolt with small rectangular (or sometimes round) bezel, there's an inset box almost the width of the door and about 4" tall. If that's the case, upgrading to modern locksets isn't an option.

But that doesn't mean you can't replace/update the door knobs themselves. There are plenty of sources for architectural restoration hardware. If you're in an area where there are (or were) lots of older homes, there's a good chance you'll find several local "antique hardware" salgvage shops. Whenever an older home is being demolished, they come in a salvage doors, windows, hardware, etc. If you can't find anything locally, try Googling "restoration hardware glass door knobs". You'll find lots of sources for both original and reproduction pieces.

On the older locksets, the doorknobs are typically held on with a set screw on the side of the knob shaft.
