What projects do you avoid around your house?

Be Jane Wants to Know!

Are there projects around your house that you've been avoiding like the plague? Maybe it’s that leaky faucet or the running toilet. Or maybe you’re color shy and have so much white in your house – white walls, white carpet, white tile – that you can no longer find your white cat fluffy!

We want to know what your top avoided home improvement projects are. Tell us here!

I hate my fireplace

TreCin writes:

I hate my fireplace. It's brick and looks very dated. I just haven't had the time to get to it. I want to either tile it with slate or a glass mosaic or perhaps even build out a frame that extends up to the ceiling and then plaster over it. First have to make up my mind, then have to do it. It's only been 7 years and counting!

Quick fix

In the mean time why don't you paint the brick? I did this to our ugly fireplace because we didn't want to spend the money to redo the whole thing. I just used a neutral color latex paint and a deep pile roller. Brick paints fairly easily. It took only one afternoon, and the room looked bright and new.

Hanging new lights

I have these pendent lights that I bought about 6 months ago and I just haven't gotten around to hanging them. It's really pretty easy I think, I'm not sure why but they're still in the box!

Grout

I tiled my fireplace and foyer probably 2 1/2 years ago, my daughter came over and helped me. When she left she said that I had to wait 24 hours before grouting. Well, it's been 2 1/2 years. Oops.

Organizing!

I just moved to a new house and have two young children. But with all the boxes, work and the kids - I just haven't had time to put anything away really. It's all generally in the right area, but eventually I need to buy or make some shelves to get the stuff up and off the floor.

Fixing my bathtub jets

doinitmyself writes:

I have this great big bathtub with spa jets, but some time about 2 years ago, they just stopped working. The tub still works, but no more spa. I'm sure it's probably either a blown fuse or something simple, but I just haven't taken the time to look and fix it. Yet, here I sit writing and telling you about it. Crazy, huh?

Refinishing antique chairs

klchatel writes:

My husband and I love antiques. Our dining room table was a damaged piece that we made into something new. Six years ago I bought antique chairs to go with it, but I have yet to refinish them. They need to be stripped, sanded and varnished. They also need new cushions made. I have refinished a lot of furniture before, but I just can't bring myself to do these chairs. Stripping chairs is soooo much work. All those corners and tight places to get into. Also, I am not much of a sewer and I don't know how to make the cushions. I did these once for my kitchen chairs and they turned out horribly.

Wall to Wall carpeting

I have really old carpeting on my living room floor. It needs to be ripped up but rather than face what could be underneath I've been avoiding this for years. I know it has to be done but....what if...

The ugliest thing ever used on ceilings. I have a living room and 3 bedrooms to do. I dread moving all the furnture out, water, scraping til my back feels like its going to break and then getting back up there to refinish it. UGH!

They are one of the ugliest things ever done to a ceiling!! I'd almost even prefer to have mirrors put on them instead (almost)! ;)

Fireplace makeover

graygrlz writes:

I, too, would like to makeover my fireplace in my new (older) home. I do like the homey feel of the brick, but the surround and mantel definitely need some pizazz. I'd also like to replace the tiled area in front of the firebox. It needs to be a bit larger, but will have to remove some hardwood flooring to do this. How about a fireplace makeover project, Heidi and Eden?

We've done it...

We completely agree with you, making over a fireplace does make a huge difference and that's why we have a few different fireplace projects in our book, Be Jane's Guide to Home Empowerment (click here to learn more about the book).

We thought it was so important that we actually also added a project on how to create a faux mantelpiece in your bedroom to add a romantic feeling and could hold candles to allow for a fire-like feel.
