Occupation: Domestic Engineer (stay at home mom)

Favorite Tool: I love my Skill saw. "Lil Mac" was a present from my hubby and kids. It has remodeled our camper and built many storage items in our house.

Project: Making a usable space out of an unusable one

Jane:: What was your first home improvement project?
Krista:: I've been helping my dad since I was 15 but the first real project I took on as an adult was building a reading room in our entry way. We never really used it and I wanted to make it more functional. I made a "wall" out of book shelves so our kids could have their own private reading room. They needed a little space of their own and it holds all of their books, CDs and stuff. When we do use the entry way the wall unit adds character and shows use of a once unusable space.

Jane:: Why did you start doing home improvement?
Krista:: My dad was a do it yourselfer and he taught me so much. Now I'm an adult and my husband is always busy so I've decided to do it myself. It's better than having a "honey do" list!

Jane:: Tell us about the room you created. What did you do to your home?
Krista:: In our bedroom we had a closet that only had room for a dresser until I expanded it to hold all of our extra blankets and bedding. I pulled up the carpet, built a stud wall, tied it in on the end and then finished it off and stained it. I then made a fabric (curtain) doorway and then made curtains for the rest of the room to match it. Now I have a ton of storage space that looks like it has always been a part of the room. What I didn't expect was that my kids use it as a place to hide out and watch TV!

Jane:: What was your favorite project?
Krista:: That's actually a really difficult question to answer because I've done so many things. One of my more recent favorite projects is the table in my living room. It was a garage sale find that I sanded down and refinished and now it looks absolutely beautiful. Everyone comes in and comments on how much they love it. The best part is when I get to tell them how I got it.

Jane:: What other home improvement projects have you worked on?
Krista:: I completely remodeled our bathroom. My husband tore everything out for me, and then I put in a new tub, shower, and toilet, then I laid the tile in a custom pattern and topped it off with a new vanity, sink and faucet.

Jane:: What's the most amazing thing you get out of doing your own home improvement?
Krista:: It's the satisfaction of seeing the finished product and how nice it looks. Being able to truly feel comfortable in my house and knowing that I did it!

Jane:: What is one basic principle that you use when doing home improvement?
Krista:: I start by thinking it through trying to see it in my head first and then I go for it.

Jane:: In what way has home improvement affected your life?
Krista:: In pretty much everything I do. Doing these types of projects reminds me of things that I've done with my Dad. I also love how my husband loves to chat about it at work with his friends. When I talk to my husband's friends they are always totally shocked by how much I've done! I get such a kick out of it. I also let my kids help me. They think it's cool and we like to say "Girls rock!"

Jane:: What is it about home improvement that inspires you?
Krista:: Being able to make a change to my home that's really mine. It's not somebody else's design or thought, I thought it up and I did it.

Jane:: What words of encouragement or advice do you have to offer a Jane just getting ready to take on her first home improvement project?
Krista:: If you can dream it, it can be done. Your home should reflect you and your family. Don't be scared of color -- paint can be redone if you hate it. But the color sets the mood of a room, so try it. Always measure twice and cut once....I learned that the hard way! Research and don't be afraid to ask the local hardware or lumber people for help or ideas. Start out small and then work your way up. Make sure you read a lot and remember, above all - you can do it!

New! See how Krista solved a nasty mold problem in her hall closet!
