I think you need to sand the item first, really good to get all the original varnish and finish off, then you can paint either with a spray paint or brush. When sanding make sure you get all the nooks and small areas or your new paint will not stick.

I did this exact thing to my entire downstairs. Each time I tried to use a paint, it chipped and looked awful. First you have to sand the entire floor - a horrible job! But once it is done, then you can choose an outdoor patio stain. I used clear and have to say I love it! With great area rugs it gives an urban/clean feel. I have three dogs and this is the best - no dog smell in the carpet!!

I'm with you! I'd like to do the same thing. Did you find anything out about this? I'm just starting to look for info. I don't know where to begin. I'd love to rip up my carpet and stain the concrete underneath!

You can order all the supplies and materials you'll need to acid stain your floors from www.DCsurfaces.com (or call the retail store at 904.858.1825). DCsurfaces has developed a VERY easy to apply overlay and acid stain system. Each kit comes with enough material to cover 200-300 sq. ft., illustrated directions and lots of helpful hints and tips. The process takes about 2-3 days (with drying/curing time) and usually costs less than $1/sq. ft.
DIYers, check out www.DCsurfaces.com! Products include: concrete countertops, acid stain, concrete resurfacing and more...
